Problem

Nova, an ambitious fintech startup, faced a classic problem: their technology was brilliant, but the way it was presented left most users confused and hesitant to engage. Their original product was dense with financial jargon and featured an interface that felt more like a back-office tool than something for everyday consumers. New users often abandoned onboarding after the first few screens, overwhelmed by complexity and a lack of clarity. Despite strong interest from investors and early hype in the industry, Nova’s growth plateaued because the product simply wasn’t resonating with real people. The challenge was clear: they needed to turn an intimidating fintech product into a tool that felt approachable, transparent, and trustworthy.

Solution

We began by reframing the product through the lens of user trust. Through in-depth workshops and interviews, we identified the exact moments where confusion or hesitation occurred during onboarding. Then we stripped the product down to its essentials, building a new design system around clarity and consistency. Every visual element, from typography to iconography, was chosen to reinforce transparency. We introduced guided flows that explained complex concepts step by step, making financial literacy an integral part of the user journey. Alongside the UX work, we also established a modular design system that allowed Nova to scale quickly, ensuring every future feature would feel seamless and cohesive.

Challenge

Designing for fintech is never just about looks—it’s about compliance, security, and precision. We had to carefully balance regulatory requirements with the user-friendly experience we envisioned. Many iterations were tested with compliance officers to ensure accuracy, while simultaneously running usability sessions with early adopters to validate simplicity. Another key challenge was internal alignment: engineers wanted to preserve advanced functionality, while product managers pushed for maximum simplification. We had to act as the bridge between business needs, regulatory frameworks, and user expectations.

Result

The transformation was significant. Nova relaunched its platform with a product that finally felt human. Onboarding completion rates rose by 45%, and the user drop-off rate fell dramatically. The brand perception shifted from “complicated fintech” to “smart but approachable finance tool.” Most importantly, Nova gained the confidence of both users and investors—securing new funding rounds and expanding into additional markets. The design system we built became a foundation for their long-term product roadmap, giving Nova the flexibility to grow without losing the clarity and trust that defined its new identity.
